Quick Answer

How does a whitening laser actually whiten skin in Gangnam?

It works by selective photothermolysis. A pulse of light is tuned to a wavelength and duration that melanin absorbs strongly, so the pigment heats and fragments while the surrounding skin is left largely untouched. A 1064nm beam travels deeper and interacts with diffuse and dermal melanin; a shorter picosecond pulse fractures shallow, defined spots. At RE:BERRY Gangnam the physician reads where your pigment sits, then keeps the energy low and repeats gentle passes, because Asian skin darkens in response to a single strong shot of heat. The same licensed physician carries the plan from the first reading through review.

Effects & Progress

Effects & Progress

Light tuned to melanin is absorbed by the pigment and passes through the rest, so surplus melanin is fractured at its source while the surrounding skin stays cool.

TimelineWhat to Expect
Right after

A faint pinkness or warmth may appear right after the pass and usually settles within an hour or two, with no crust to hide, so daily life resumes the same day.

After 2 weeks

Surface dullness lifts first as the freshest epidermal layer turns over. The complexion already reads a shade clearer before the deeper pigment has moved, and the next visit is set around your week.

After 1โ€“3 months

The working phase across the course. Diffuse pigment and stubborn marks lighten in thin layers and the tone evens zone by zone. Response speed varies by individual and pigment depth.

6โ€“12 months

Maintenance period. Daily sun protection plus an occasional upkeep visit hold the tone, and for melasma-prone skin RE:BERRY sets a gentle ongoing rhythm.

Treatment Process

Skin Whitening Laser โ€” Wavelength Matched to Pigment, in 4 Steps

โ€ป Illustrative images are AI-generated to help explain the treatment process.
STEP 1

STEP 1. 1:1 Personal Consultation

Your physician images the skin under polarized light, sorts surface dullness from defined spots and diffuse deeper pigment, and logs your Fitzpatrick phototype. That reading, not the newest machine, decides the wavelength and how low the fluence has to run.

STEP 2

STEP 2. Cleansing & Numbing Cream

After cleansing, numbing cream rests for 20โ€“30 minutes. The sealed product label is confirmed with you before opening.

STEP 3

STEP 3. Precision Dermal Injection

The matched beam sweeps the mapped field in fine, overlapping passes. Each pulse hands the pigment just enough energy to break and no more, so surplus melanin lightens without a wound. You feel a light warmth and a faint prickle, and darker patches take their own reduced setting.

STEP 4

STEP 4. Soothing Care & Aftercare Guide

Cooling settles the skin and a ceramide cream steadies the barrier; the faint pinkness clears within an hour or two, with no crust to hide. You leave with SPF 50+ and a sun plan, since ultraviolet re-stimulates the melanin the pass just cleared.

Effects & Progress

Effects & Progress

Melanin Absorbed, Pigment Broken

A whitening laser works by selective absorption: a wavelength melanin takes up far more strongly than the tissue around it, held to a pulse brief enough to keep the heat confined. Low-fluence 1064nm light travels through the surface, reaches the melanin sitting in and below the epidermis, and breaks the surplus into fine particles the body's own clearance carries off over the following weeks. That is how a whitening laser lifts discoloration at its source, and it does so without opening a wound or sanding the surface.

Fine Lines & Pores

Across a run of short visits, diffuse dullness, dark spots and post-blemish marks lighten while the overall complexion evens out and reads brighter. Because the surplus pigment weighing the skin down is what clears, the change is real brightening of your own baseline, and it holds past the day of the pass. The fluence is kept gentle so reactive skin is not over-stimulated, and the schedule spreads across your weeks. Response speed varies by individual and pigment depth.

Texture & Glow

The mild thermal stimulation that rides along with the toning wavelength also nudges dermal collagen. Over a course this adds a quiet bonus beyond pigment care: treated skin often feels a little smoother, pores look a shade tighter, and the finish carries a healthier glow. Pigment control stays the aim of the session, and this arrives with the wavelength as a bonus, never a separate treatment sold on top.

Essentially No Downtime

A low-fluence whitening pass is one of the lightest laser treatments, and the near-absence of downtime is what lets it fit a travel or work day. A visit runs short, the faint pinkness or warmth usually settles within an hour or two, and there is nothing to peel or dress from the pass. Makeup goes on shortly after, so the session drops into a lunch window or an after-work slot without costing you a day, which matters most on a short Seoul itinerary.

STEP 1. 1:1 Personal Consultation
STEP 1. 1:1 Personal Consultation

Your physician images the skin under polarized light and separates what is actually there: surface dullness, defined lentigines, and the diffuse deeper pigment that behaves like melasma. Your Fitzpatrick phototype is logged, because a setting that suits fair skin is often too hot for an olive or deep complexion. This is where the honest target is set. The melanin sitting over your baseline is what a whitening laser can move; the tone you were born with is not. You leave this step knowing which concern the light will lift and which one sits outside its reach.

STEP 2. Cleansing & Numbing Cream
STEP 2. Cleansing & Numbing Cream

Light and target are paired to the reading, and eye shields are placed. Diffuse pigment and melasma-prone skin take a 1064nm beam at low fluence, which reaches deeper and spreads its energy gently; discrete, shallow spots take a shorter picosecond pulse that shatters them near the surface. For Fitzpatrick IV to VI the energy is pulled down further, and a small test area behind the ear confirms how the skin answers before any full pass begins. The physician marks the zones so each gets the wavelength it needs, never one blanket setting for the whole face.

STEP 3. Precision Dermal Injection
STEP 3. Precision Dermal Injection

The matched beam sweeps the mapped field in fine, overlapping passes, read against the imaging on the screen. Each pulse deposits only enough energy to fracture surplus melanin into particles the body clears, and no more, which is what lets the pigment lighten without the wound that would cost you recovery time. You feel a light warmth and a faint prickle. Darker patches take their own reduced setting, melasma-prone zones are kept below the fluence that provokes a rebound, and the physician re-checks intensity zone by zone and adjusts to your feedback. A working pass runs 15 to 30 minutes depending on the area.

STEP 4. Soothing Care & Aftercare Guide
STEP 4. Soothing Care & Aftercare Guide

A cooling pack and regeneration cream soothe the skin right after treatment. Embossing and mild bruising may last 2โ€“5 days; avoid sauna, alcohol, and intense exercise on the day. We recommend 3 sessions at 3โ€“4 week intervals, then maintenance every 6โ€“12 months.

Benefits & Results

What the Physics of a Whitening Laser Buys You in Gangnam

  • Melanin is the target, tissue is spared: a wavelength melanin absorbs strongly heats the pigment and leaves the surrounding skin cool, so discoloration is cleared at its source and the surface is never sanded
  • Depth is chosen by wavelength: a 1064nm beam reaches diffuse and dermal pigment while a shorter picosecond pulse fractures shallow, defined spots, and the physician switches between them within one plan
  • Low fluence by design: the energy is kept below the threshold that provokes melasma, and the change is built across repeated gentle passes, the approach that suits reactive skin
  • Tone-improvement and lesion-removal are separated: diffuse dullness responds to toning, defined lesions to a spot-specific pass, and the two goals are planned as separate lines of work
  • Same physician from the first pigment reading through every pass to your review, so your whitening plan is never handed to a rotating operator mid-course
  • Genuine, MFDS-registered devices and standardized-lighting photos before and after, so progress is measured against your own documented baseline
TimelineWhat to Expect
A faint pinkness or warmth may appear right after a toning pass and usually settles within an hour or two; a spot-specific picosecond pass may leave a fine speck that lifts over a few days
Surface dullness lifts first as the freshest epidermal layer turns over, so the complexion reads a shade clearer before the deeper pigment has moved
The next low-fluence pass is set once the barrier has recovered; diffuse and dermal pigment fades gradually across the course, a little at each visit
Even tone builds over the completed course, with a quiet collagen-remodeling bonus from the wavelength; strict daily sun protection is what holds it

Why This Matters

These are three different physical events, not three grades of the same thing. Low-fluence 1064nm toning warms diffuse melanin gently through the dermis; a picosecond pulse delivers a photoacoustic shock that shatters a defined spot in a fraction of a nanosecond; IPL floods the skin with a band of wavelengths at once. The reading at RE:BERRY Gangnam decides which physics your face actually needs, and often the answer is a combination staged across the course.

Why low-fluence repetition became the standard for Asian skin is a matter of melanin load. A deeper phototype carries more melanin at rest, so a strong pass meant for fair skin can overheat the epidermis and leave post-inflammatory darkening, the exact opposite of the goal. The answer that held up was to lower the energy under that threshold and repeat gentle passes. Course pricing starts at โ‚ฉ300,000 (about $214), mapped across the visits the pigment actually requires.

KHIDI's 2025 international patient survey found 41.4% of respondents rank keeping the same doctor throughout as their leading criterion. At RE:BERRY the physician who reads your pigment is the one who runs every low-fluence pass and checks your fade at review, with no handoff between the reading and the laser.

The Physics Behind a Whitening Laser

The entire idea of a whitening laser sits on one principle. Anderson and Parrish set it out in 1983: a pulse of light matched to a target's absorption peak and to a pulse duration shorter than the time that target takes to shed its heat will destroy that target and spare its neighbours. For pigment work the target is melanin. Choose the wavelength melanin absorbs and hold the pulse brief, and the pigment cooks while the surrounding dermis stays cool. Wavelength is therefore read off the pigment, never off a preference for one device: a 1064nm beam travels deeper and works on diffuse and dermal melanin, while shorter pulses shatter shallow, defined spots.

Anderson RR, Parrish JA. Selective Photothermolysis: Precise Microsurgery by Selective Absorption of Pulsed Radiation. Science. 1983;220(4596):524-527. doi:10.1126/science.6836297

Phototype is the reason a Seoul clinic cannot borrow settings from a lighter-skinned population. Fitzpatrick's classification of sun-reactive skin types quantified what clinicians already saw: darker phototypes carry more baseline melanin and respond differently to light and heat. That baseline load is exactly what makes an aggressive whitening pass risky in Asian skin, because the epidermis has more pigment to overheat before the beam ever reaches its intended target.

Fitzpatrick TB. The Validity and Practicality of Sun-Reactive Skin Types I Through VI. Archives of Dermatology. 1988;124(6):869-871. doi:10.1001/archderm.1988.01670060015008

Melasma is where the physics turns unforgiving. It sits partly in the dermis, it is provoked by heat and light, and a high-energy pass tuned for a sunspot can drive it darker than the starting point. Work on refractory melasma with Q-switched pigment lasers documented both the difficulty and the direction of travel: energy has to be handled with restraint, and heavy single passes are the trap. That evidence is why RE:BERRY Gangnam runs melasma-prone tone below the provocation threshold, in repeated low-fluence passes that stay well clear of one strong shot.

Angsuwarangsee S, Polnikorn N. Combined Ultrapulse CO2 Laser and Q-Switched Alexandrite Laser Compared with Q-Switched Alexandrite Laser Alone for Refractory Melasma: Split-Face Design. Dermatologic Surgery. 2003;29(1):59-64. doi:10.1046/j.1524-4725.2003.29009.x

The laser is one instrument in a longer strategy. Reviews of hyperpigmentation care place topical agents and daily photoprotection alongside device treatment, because ultraviolet re-triggers the melanin a pass just cleared. That is the reasoning behind the ceramide repair, SPF 50+, and firm sun-avoidance guidance built into aftercare here: the physics of the pass fades the pigment, and the routine is what keeps it from rebuilding.

Sarkar R, Arora P, Garg K. Cosmeceuticals for hyperpigmentation: What is available? Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery. 2013;6(1):4-11. doi:10.4103/0974-2077.110089

Common Questions

Questions International Guests Ask About Whitening Laser in Gangnam

Does a whitening laser actually make my skin lighter than my natural tone?

No. A whitening laser clears the melanin sitting over your baseline, the sun spots, the melasma, the dull uneven layer, so the tone you already have reads brighter. It does not bleach or replace the tone you were born with, and the physician at RE:BERRY Gangnam sets that expectation at the reading. What lifts is the surplus pigment, not your natural colour.

How does light break down pigment without damaging the rest of my skin?

Through selective photothermolysis. A pulse is tuned to a wavelength that melanin absorbs far more strongly than the surrounding tissue, and kept brief enough that the heat stays confined to the pigment before it can spread. The melanin fragments into particles the body clears, while the skin around it is left cool. It is a targeting problem solved by wavelength and pulse duration, not a chemical peel of the whole surface.

Why do you use a 1064nm wavelength for toning at such a low setting?

A 1064nm beam penetrates deeper than shorter wavelengths and interacts with diffuse and dermal pigment gently, which is what melasma-prone and reactive skin needs. Held at low fluence, it deposits just enough energy to break surplus melanin without overheating the epidermis. Pushing the energy higher would clear pigment faster on paper, but in the skin types common across Asia that is exactly how discoloration rebounds.

What is the difference between whitening my tone and removing a specific spot?

They are two goals with two physical approaches. Improving overall tone means treating diffuse melanin across a field with gentle, repeated toning passes. Removing a defined lesion, a discrete sunspot or lentigo, means delivering a photoacoustic picosecond pulse to shatter that single cluster. At RE:BERRY Gangnam the physician plans them separately, because one setting cannot serve a whole-face dullness and a pinpoint spot at the same time.

Why is low-fluence repetition the standard for Asian and deeper skin tones?

Deeper phototypes carry more melanin at rest, so a strong pass meant for fair skin can overheat the epidermis and leave post-inflammatory darkening. The technique that held up clinically was to lower the energy under that provocation threshold and build the result across repeated gentle passes. It is slower by design, and that slowness is the safety margin for reactive skin.

Is a whitening laser safe if I have melasma?

Melasma is the one pigment where a careless setting genuinely backfires, since it sits partly in the dermis and is provoked by heat. At RE:BERRY Gangnam it is treated with 1064nm toning kept below the provocation threshold, across several low-fluence passes, and deeper skin tones are prepped and test-patched first. Starting pricing is published at โ‚ฉ300,000 (about $214), mapped to the sessions your case needs.

How many sessions does a whitening laser course take?

Diffuse tone and melasma are worked across a toning series, one thin layer at a sitting, because low-fluence passes lighten pigment gradually. Isolated defined spots often need only a small number of picosecond passes. The physician confirms your session count after the pigment reading, since the number depends on what type of pigment you actually have and how deep it sits.

What downtime should I expect after a whitening laser pass?

A low-fluence toning pass carries almost none, just a faint warmth or pinkness that usually settles within an hour or two, with nothing to peel or dress. A spot-specific picosecond pass may leave a fine dark speck on the treated spot that lifts within a few days. Makeup is generally fine soon after, so toning slots into a work or travel day cleanly.

Does a whitening laser do anything besides fade pigment?

The mild thermal stimulation that rides along with the toning wavelength also nudges dermal collagen, so treated skin often reads a touch smoother and pores look a shade tighter over a course. It is a side benefit of the physics, not a separate treatment sold on top. Pigment control stays the aim of the session, and any texture gain comes with the wavelength.

Can a whitening laser treatment fit into a short Seoul trip?

A single toning or spot pass fits easily, since downtime is measured in hours. For a full course the physician times your last pass early enough that any pinkness settles before your flight, and prefers to split the remaining sessions across return trips. Send your travel dates on WhatsApp so the plan is built around your itinerary.

Why does sun protection matter so much after a whitening laser?

Ultraviolet re-stimulates the same melanin the laser just cleared, so photoprotection is what holds the result, every single day. The physician builds SPF 50+, a short hold on retinoids and acids, and a firm sun-avoidance window into aftercare. Skip it and the pigment the pass fought to fade simply rebuilds. The routine is part of the treatment, not an afterthought.

Who performs the laser, and is it the same person who reads my skin?

The physician who reads your pigment under polarized light is the one who sets the fluence, runs every pass, and checks your fade at review, with no handoff to a rotating operator. RE:BERRY Gangnam is reservation-only for international guests, and staff interpreters cover 8 languages on-site so the reading and the plan are explained clearly in your language.

How do I book a whitening laser consultation in Gangnam as a visitor?

Science Whitening laser and selective photothermolysis: peer-reviewed references

A whitening laser rests on selective photothermolysis, the principle Anderson and Parrish established in 1983: a pulse matched to melanin's absorption and to a short duration destroys the pigment while sparing the tissue around it (Anderson 1983). Because darker phototypes carry more baseline melanin, settings cannot be borrowed from lighter skin; Fitzpatrick's classification quantified that difference and remains the reference for calibrating energy (Fitzpatrick 1988). Melasma is treated apart from the rest, since it sits partly in the dermis and is provoked by heat, and work on refractory melasma with Q-switched pigment lasers documented the need for restraint over heavy single passes (Angsuwarangsee 2003). Because ultraviolet re-triggers cleared pigment, reviews of hyperpigmentation care pair device treatment with topical agents and strict photoprotection (Sarkar 2013).

These references shape the whitening laser protocol at RE:BERRY's Gangnam skin clinic: a polarized-light pigment reading and phototype grading by the treating physician before any energy is delivered; wavelength chosen from the pigment (1064nm for diffuse and dermal melanin, a picosecond pulse for shallow defined spots); low fluence held below the melasma provocation threshold across repeated passes; retroauricular test patching for deeper phototypes; and standardized-lighting follow-up under the same licensed physician.
